Study finds that 1 bottle of wine a week equals 5 to 10 cigarettes

Study finds that 1 bottle of wine a week equals 5 to 10 cigarettesStudy finds that 1 bottle of wine a week equals 5 to 10 cigarettesA study published Thursday in the journal BMC Public Health conducted by a team of experts from The University of Southhampton and Bangor University analyzes the cigarette equivalency of alcohol consumption as it relates to krebs risks. The study is helmed by lead author Dr. Theresa Hydes of the Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreDr. Hydes believes the krebs risks associated with cigarettes are pretty well reported compared to alcohol even though excessive alcohol consumption has been linked to throat cancer, mouth cancer, gullet cancer, bowel cancer, cancer of the liver and breast cancer She explains, We hope that by using cigarettes as the comparator we could communicate this message more effectively to help individuals make more informed lifestyle choices,Before we delve into the stud in detail its important to note that its implications are not without censure. The spokeswoman for the Alcohol Information Partnership has publicly rebuked the recent study as potentially misleading, claiming that the information indexed below suggests results that might deter otherwise healthy individuals from moderately enjoying alcohol.A quantitative examination of risksThe study concludes One bottle of wine per week is associated with an increased absolute lifetime risk of alcohol-related cancers in women, driven by breast cancer, equivalent to the increased absolute cancer risk associated with 10 cigarettes per week. This is important because the findings detailed in the recent study assess lifetime risks which do not strictly intimate dangers linked to moderate alcohol consumption. More specifically the researchers conjecture that if 1,000 non- smoking men and 1,000 non-smoking women drank one bottle of wine per week over the course of their lifetime, about 10 men and 14 women would develop cancer as a result. If 1,000 men and 1,000 women drank three bottles of wine per week, the respective cases of cancer were estimated to rise to 19 and 36 respectively.Three bottles were equated with about eight cigarettes a week for men and 23 cigarettes a week for women.Collectively these figures can be expressed as a 1% cancer increase for non-smoking men that imbibe one bottle of wine per week and a 1.4% cancer risk increase for non-smoking women that consume a bottle of wine a week. While the data suggests the less you drink the less you increase your risk for cancer, drinking in moderation is probably ok for individuals that dont adopt additional habits that come with correlative or causal risk factors. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven w ords you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

Learn What a Soundcheck Is and How to Do One

Learn What a Soundcheck Is and How to Do OneLearn What a Soundcheck Is and How to Do OneA soundcheck takes place before a performance to check the venues sound system and ensure that the sound in the front of the house (for the audience) and rear-facing speakers (the stage monitor sound systems) is clear and at the proper volume and frequencies. During soundcheck, musicians set up their instruments, plug in and play a few songs, working with the ?sound engineer to get the right levels for both the audience and what the musicians are hearing on stage. When a Soundcheck Takes Place Soundcheck usually happens about an hour after load in. The headlining act gets to soundcheck first, partly because its a privilege of being the headliner (when you soundcheck first, you usually have a long break before you have to play) but also for logistical reasons. If the opening musikgruppe soundchecks last, their gear can remain set up on stage so that they can simply walk out and play without add itional set up time. Tips for a Successful Soundcheck Hughes Kettner, manufacturers of high-quality guitar amps, offers some useful advice on preparing for a soundcheck Be prepared Do your research and know what to expect prior to arriving at the venue. Before the show, send your bands stage plot to the sound engineer. If the venue if prepared for your arrival, loading in and setting up will be more efficient. A productive soundcheck can be done in well under an hour. Arrive early If you spend too much time loading in, it can cut into your critical soundcheck time or even eliminate it altogether.Get ready to hit the stage You know your set, so set up your rig appropriately in advance. This includes the number of guitars needed (dont forget the spares), your amp and FX pedal settings, and preparing the proper cables and power supplies. Dial in your amps settings beforehand you can adjust them during soundcheck as needed. Same deal for your pedalshave them set and ready with new batteries. Accept that the sound engineer knows best This is the time when the engineer can help take your music from sounding good to greatif you let him. The engineer is in the best position to judge and if he asks you to turn down the volume (a common request) or change up your sound, hes got your back. Also, dont forget that the audience absorbs sound and rooms without people can sound boomy and bad.Soundcheck isnt a rehearsal or performance Soundcheck isnt the time to just plug in, let loose and start killing it on stage. Nor is it the time to toy with new songs youre writing or performing your whole set. This is serious preparation time that sets the stage for the quality of your show. When youre Paul McCartney you can show off your offbeat numbers and later use a few of those on your live album, as he does, but until then, play snippets of at least two songs. Choose your loudest and quietest tracks as they give the engineer more to work with, and play songs that use all your instruments and mics at once.
