5 Tips for Landing an Interview with an Online Job Application - CareerAlley

5 Tips for Landing an Interview with an Online Job Application - CareerAlley We may receive compensation when you click on links to products from our partners. Todays job search is almost entirely Internet-based. Whether you are looking for software engineering jobs available on LinkedIn or applying for a job on a job search board, it has become increasingly easier to apply for a job. You can apply for 20 jobs in the time it used to take to apply for 1 or 2 jobs. This is, of course, a double-edged sword and is the primary reason why most people feel that the hit rate (the actual number of interviews you get as compared to the number of job applications submitted) is very low. Any one job posting could have 100 (or 100s of applications). And the longer the job has been posted, the higher the number of applications will already have been sent. There are several key factors which can help you focus your search. source Keywords are key (no pun intended) So many applications, so little time. Many recruiters and companies use software to help them focus on the best matching applications. You should ensure that your resume and cover letter (see below) have the keywords that closely match the job description. This may require that you have multiple versions of your resume (see 5 Steps to a Great Resume versions). Review job listings for your title/position and make a list of keywords used (incorporate these into your resume) Review resume samples for your industry for keywords Visit trade industry sites for your field source Job Search Boards There are tons of job search boards and you dont need to be on all of them. Focus on a few and spend the rest of your time on the other three legs of job search (see The Four Legs of Job Search). Many jobs are posted on multiple job search boards (so less is more in this case). Also, as mentioned earlier, the older a job posting the more likely that many (probably too many) applications have already been submitted. While this does not mean that its a waste of time to submit your application, you should focus on job postings from the last few days. If youve run out of more current postings, then submitting to older postings is certainly worth considering. Budget the amount of time you spend on job search sites. While it may seem like you are being productive applying to many jobs via job boards, you need to understand how to maximize the time spent applying online. There are literally thousands of job sites on the web, but the best job boards and job search engine sites have search tools that are quick and easy to use and allow you to search based on the type of job youre looking for, your location, and other criteria. Alison Doyle Are You Qualified? No sense applying for a job online if you are not qualified. Dont be sucked into I can do that, stick to what you know and can do based on your experience. Read the job description and compare it to your experience Dont worry if you are a few years shy of the number of years experience required. However, if you are 10 years short of the required experience, you probably shouldnt waste your time applying How do your skills compare to the requirements? Look for at least a 60% to 75% match as a criterion for applying Accomplishments are a huge factor if youve already done what they are looking for the candidate to do this is a very good match apply. Cover Letters May seem old school to you, but cover letters are still very important to your job search, especially when applying online (see 10 Cover Letter Tips). Whenever you apply for a job position through a job search board or company career site, you really should include a cover letter so that the hiring manager knows there is a match between your skill set, experience, and the job opportunity. Tweet This Make each cover letter original This is a perfect example of where cutting corners does not work in your favor. Spend the time on personalizing the cover letter to each application. Mentioning the title of the job and briefly indicate why you are the perfect candidate Add something specific to the job description so that the reader will know that you are qualified for the job Try to address the cover letter to the hiring manager if you can find out their name Photo by Emily Morter on Unsplash Answer All of the Questions (correctly) An incomplete application with grammatical errors will not get you an interview. Complete the app in the same way you would participate in an interview. The online job app is not a formality, it is one of the key components in deciding if you get an interview. Answer all of the questions completely To the extent possible, use the same keywords you used in your resume and cover letter If you reuse information used in other applications, ensure it is cleansed of information related to other applications Check for spelling and grammatical errors What's next? Investing In Your Dreams (guest post by Brigitte Lyons)

Investing In Your Dreams (guest post by Brigitte Lyons) Ive Got the Dreamers Disease by ParadaCreations Hi there! My name’s Brigitte â€" and we have some things in common. First, I read When I Grow Up Coach, so there’s that. I’m also obsessive about sussing out and living my life purpose. If you’re a fan of Michelle’s, I’m thinking it’s a fair bet you are, too. In that spirit, Michelle invited me to share some thoughts on a topic that is…well…it’s all I ever seem to think about lately: investing in your dreams. You see, I am notorious for having huge ideas that go nowhere. I’m pretty familiar with that look. Maybe you’ve seen it, too? The look of the furrowed brow and, “there she goes again.” It used to bring me down. A lot. Until I read some pieces that suggested entrepreneurs and otherwise creative people find that one grand idea by working through â€" and discarding â€" loads of mediocre ones. That sounds about right. I’ll leave it up to Michelle to help you figure out your grand idea. I’m more interested in helping you get through the meantime. Because, far too often, we wait until we have that supreme idea to start investing in it. Traditional thinking goes: 1. Have grand idea 2. Make a plan 3. Work the plan 4. Reap the rewards! Take it from me…don’t waste your time on this process. If you wait for the amazeballs idea to strike, you’re likely to get stuck in a long (and excruciating) gestation period. If you’re reading this blog, bets are that you know you want to make a change in your life. You’re primed for a personal revolution. You feel it deep inside your marrow. So why wait? Start investing in your dream â€" and now! Even if you don’t know what the change is just yet. Your investment can take so many forms. · Take a class or otherwise gain a new skill. Is there something you “always wished” you knew how to do? Go learn it! · Meet some people. Is there a field that interests you, but you don’t know the first thing about the day-to-day of it all? Go to an event, or simply find someone who blogs in the industry and introduce yourself. · And, do save your pennies! Go big and set up a specialized savings account with a dream fund. It’s beyond empowering to know that you are setting aside something, anything, for your big dream. This is exactly what I’m doing in my own life. I’ve taken up sewing, photography and I started a blog that I became amazingly committed to. I learned something rather surprising about myself in the process. I’m some sort of creative person. Hand on my heart, I never considered myself creative until this year. Even though I always wrote. I have a degree in creative writing, for pete’s sake! So…my personal experience: invest in your dreams, pick up new hobbies, and learn something about yourself that’s always been there. Through my blogging, I’ve met loads of new people. People totally outside of my social circle. And in that time, I realized how deeply I’ve changed in the last five years. Somehow it’s easier to shake old patterns with new friends. Imagine that, right?! I’ve gestated more than my share of mediocre ideas in the last five years. But the more I talk about them, research them and work my way toward them, the closer I creep towards clarity. Some of those ideas aren’t even mediocre…but they’re not right for me in this moment in time. So I keep saving my pennies, writing (and writing and writing), and taking up new hobbies. And I keep reminding myself, over and over, to enjoy the meantime. Because my life is already better than I imagined it could be, even if my grand idea isn’t born just yet. Don’t wait until you have that grand idea to start working toward it. What can you do this week to invest in your dreams? Brigitte writes at Covet about the intersection between life, joy and purpose. Her latest project has been a process for creating budgets that bring balance to your life in a 6-week series called Warm Soft Money. (Michelles note: Shes the coolest! Thanks for being here, Brigitte! )

A Simple Tip on Writing a Store Manager Resume

A Simple Tip on Writing a Store Manager ResumeAssistant store manager resumes are often overlooked and simply overlooked because they do not have to be the hardest part of the job. They also do not have to include everything you need to do in order to get a job, but when it comes down to it, you will have to put in a good amount of work before you will be hired for the position. So if you want to maximize your chances of getting hired, it is best to spend a little time preparing a great assistant store manager resume.Your assistant store manager resume should not contain too much information that is not required for the job. For example, if you are seeking an assistant store manager job with a chain that has been open for several years, then you do not need to include every detail about the company. However, if you are searching for a new job in a relatively new company, it would be appropriate to include any new companies that you have joined and to include any new opportunities or promotions you have gotten. If you want to mention the name of the company or the role you are applying for, it is always better to include that information first in the job description. To save you from wasting valuable time on writing an assistant store manager resume, just use your local library or your church. For instance, you can find stacks of reference books regarding stores management. Reading these books will allow you to learn what you need to know to become successful as a store manager. This information can then be used in your assistant store manager resume. Most of the information that you include in your assistant store manager resume will be used by employers. However, you should keep in mind that the employer has already decided whether you will be getting the job or not. So do not include anything in your assistant store manager resume that you do not think is relevant to the job you are applying for. Although you may feel like you need to make the boss happy, you s hould not do so, since you will end up wasting time.Assistant store manager and sales associate managers are generally promoted only after a few years of experience, though some of them can be promoted earlier. For this reason, you should leave some space for the opportunity to hire you when you finish with your current position. By leaving some room for advancement, you will have more freedom to move on to something new.Another thing that you should consider when writing your assistant store manager resume is the fact that many recruiters do not check all the details before hiring applicants. If you are applying for the position of assistant store manager, you may want to include these details: the position you held at the previous company; your accomplishments, including any awards or honors you received; previous companies that you worked for; previous positions; and any important dates from your past job. These points will help the recruiter understand why you are qualified for the assistant store manager position. If you did not get hired, the recruiter can put these points into consideration. If you do not include these details, the recruiter may think that you are trying to mislead them and the two of you could have a very difficult conversation later on.These are the main reasons why you should focus on your assistant store manager resume when you apply for the position. It is easy to focus on the important things to include when you write a resume, but if you ignore the details that should be included, you will end up wasting a lot of time and money. If you want to succeed, do not forget to include all the relevant information that you can and then start looking for the job.
